Hockey fans in Nipawin lost a local legend on July 4, 2025 when local boy Lyndon Byers passed away at the age of 61.

Born in Nipawin on February 29, 1964, Byers had an NHL career that lasted from 1983 until 1993 where he jumped in and out of the AHL. Of his 279 games in the NHL, 261 of them were spent as a member of the Boston Bruins, while the final 18 games of his NHL career were with the San Jose Sharks.

Originally drafted by the Bruins in the 1982 NHL Entry Draft 39th overall, his best season in the NHL saw Byers post 10G-14A-24P in 53 games, along with 236 penalty minutes. Byers was known throughout his career for his toughness as an enforcer, playing alongside the likes of Phil Esposito and Cam Neely, the latter of which he was best friends with.

After a few years in the minor leagues, Byers finally retired from hockey partway through the 1994-95 season where he retired as a member of the Minnesota Moose of the IHL.

From there, Byers went back to Boston where he spent nearly three decades on the radio with WAAF-FM, first as a sports specialist with the Hill Man Morning Show for 23 years, and later as the host of his own afternoon show.

Lyndon is survived by his wife Annie, and son Will.
