Drought impacts crops on the Prairies

Jul 7, 2025 | 11:56 AM

Prairie farmers are facing another year of drought and it’s forcing some to consider getting out of the business.

Quinton Jacksteit, who farms near Golden Prairie in southwest Saskatchewan, says it is the ninth year his fields have dried out.

He says his crops are extremely short, and he plans to salvage most of them for animal feed.

Jacksteit is the reeve of his municipality and says others are considering selling their farms.

Virginia Maier, the reeve of nearby Enterprise, says she’s hearing the same thing and that her crops are dying.

Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada’s drought monitor shows swaths of the country have been anywhere from abnormally dry to extremely parched.

Trevor Hadwen, an agri-climate specialist with the department, says southwest Saskatchewan, near the Alberta boundary, has experienced drought for eight years, and the summer forecast isn’t looking favourable to help crops bounce back.

Jacksteit says changes to Saskatchewan’s crop insurance program are needed to help farmers financially survive.
