Saskatchewan Roughriders QB Trevor Harris back after bye week

Trevor Harris is glad to be back on the field.

The Saskatchewan Roughriders quarterback missed the team’s 37-18 win over the B.C. Lions on June 28 with a concussion prior to the team’s bye week.

As the CFL club returned to practice, the 39-year-old was ready to go.

“I had my bye week (the week prior) so I’m excited to be back out here,” Harris said.

He said he was close to being able to play in that game.

“I was fine. Let’s not go down that road — a little bit of a shouting match but always trust what the doctors are saying,” Harris said. “They are looking out for our best interests. At the end of the day, we’ve only got one brain.”

Harris admitted he felt symptoms of the concussion when the hit occurred late in the first quarter of the win over the Toronto Argonauts on June 20. Argos defensive lineman Jordan Williams was penalized for roughing the passer and was fined by the league for the late hit.

On the prior play, Riders receiver Dhel Duncan-Busby was penalized and fined for a block on Toronto linebacker Kenneth George Jr., that saw him get injured on the play.

“I knew something was going on during the game. When the other defence tells you they are going to do something and they do it, maybe you should believe them that they did it on purpose,” Harris said.

“It was an unfortunate situation that their linebacker got hurt and I know their guys were wanting to do something about it and it was just unfortunate. I’m like, ‘Man, I hope nothing happens and let’s just play good physical football,’ and then that happens.

“I felt a little bit dazed but at the same time, I had a pretty bad virus and trickles of it — it was a four-week deal. I wasn’t really sure what wasn’t the virus. I know after the game and during the game I was little bit fuzzy … I don’t condone what I did in terms of staying in there but it’s not fault of the team or the doctors, I didn’t report anything. I wanted to stay through and grind it out.”

Harris added he wasn’t accusing the Argos of injuring him on purpose.

“I didn’t feel like it was a clean hit but it is what it is. I don’t think he’s a dirty player, he’s a good football player and just an unfortunate situation,” Harris said.

Harris will look to help the Riders reach 5-0 when the club hosts the Calgary Stampeders on Friday. Kickoff for the game at Mosaic Stadium is set for 7 p.m. The Green Zone pregame show begins at 5 p.m.

“Hopefully we can start kicking it up a notch and getting this team into gear because I think we are scratching the surface of who we are going to be,” Harris said.

When it comes to other injuries, wide receiver Sam Emilus (foot) was out during practice but mostly worked along the sidelines Monday. Offensive lineman Trevon Tate (shoulder), defensive back Tevaughn Campbell (groin) and running back Thomas Betrand-Hudon (thigh) didn’t participate in practice.
