Highly contagious

Measles exposure risk in Rosthern; 60 cases total reported in Sask.

Jul 11, 2025 | 11:20 AM

The Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) is warning of another measles exposure risk.

This time it happened at the Rosthern Gas Plus on Wednesday, July 9 from 6:45 a.m. to 9:15 a.m.

Anyone who believes they were exposed should call HealthLine 811 if they are also unvaccinated, unsure of their vaccination status for measles, or develop measles symptoms, which include small, white spots inside the mouth and throat, fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes, irritability and fatigue. Symptoms also include a red blotchy rash, which develops on the face and spreads down the body about three to seven days after symptoms begin and can last four to seven days.

The SHA recommends anyone who may have been exposed to monitor for measles symptoms for up to 21 days after exposure. Anyone potentially exposed may be eligible for preventative treatment for up to six days after exposure if they are unvaccinated, pregnant, under one year of age or immunocompromised.

From March 14 to July 9, 2025, a total of 60 measles cases have been reported in Saskatchewan. The majority of cases, 22, have occurred in people aged 5-17. A total of 17 cases have occurred in the 18-54 age group, 16 cases in 1-4 year olds, three cases in those under one year old and two cases have occurred in people over the age of 54. The SHA reports that 86.7 per cent of those cases were in people who were unvaccinated. All cases have recovered.

Measles is highly contagious. It can spread very easily to others through the air. The virus can live up to two hours in the air or on surfaces in a space where a person coughed or sneezed. It can spread from four days before a rash appears until four days after a rash develops. Through this period, a person needs to stay in strict isolation to avoid spreading the infection to others. Measles is prevented by vaccination.
