A massive celebration brought people to Nipawin on the weekend.

The community celebrated its 100th birthday and homecoming Friday through Sunday.

Among the dignitaries at the event were Premier Scott Moe, Carrot River Valley MLA Terri Bromm, and of course Nipawin Mayor Marlon Zacharias.

A variety of events highlighted the festivities during the celebration, including a homecoming meet-and-greet, car show, fire hall open house, the Heliport grand opening, a street dance and street fair, and fireworks.

The annual parade was also held on Sunday as the community prepared for the Nipawin Exhibition, taking place Monday through Wednesday.

Zacharias said the weather for the birthday celebration was beautiful and the event was a lot of fun for everyone.

“It’s a fantastic day,” Zacharias said. “This only happens once every 100 years.”

The Town of Nipawin has an incredibly interesting backstory that includes a significant move. The entire community moved about seven kilometres to be close to the rail line.

“It just shows the importance of the rail back then and shows our commitment to growth and being such a strong community working together,” Zacharias explained.

He said being able to move an entire community that distance during that time must have been incredibly difficult.

“If you were to undertake something like that today, it would be virtually impossible to move a community like that.”

According to Zacharias, Nipawin’s move is a symbol of strength and belief in each other. The growth of the community continued through the next 100 years, and Zacharias said we can now look forward to the next 100 years in Nipawin.
