Artists to be highlighted at Back Alley Tour in Melfort

A yearly arts showcase in Melfort continues to grow.

The Back Alley Tour will be held July 17 in the back alley behind Northern Lights Gallery, just east of the 200 block of Main Street.

The show runs from 2 to 8 p.m.

Organizer Sandra Dancey told northeastNOW the event is getting bigger and better each year.

“We haven’t quite doubled the number of artists since this first started nine years ago, but we’re getting there,” Dancey said.

There are over 50 artists signed up for this year’s Back Alley Tour, showcasing a wide variety of mediums. Dancey said there will also be food trucks on site, with TJ’s Pizza and the Melfort Legion also having food available.

The Back Alley Tour is held just before the Melfort Exhibition each year, and Dancey said her goal was to fill a gap in the summer months just before the annual fair.

“Not that the fair isn’t awesome, but it’s kind of nice to have this free, outdoor appreciate-the-artist-from-the-neighbourhood kind of event.”

Dancey said the event promotes local artists and what they have to offer. Meanwhile, a technology-based medium has joined the lineup of perhaps more ‘traditional’ artists this year.

“This year, one of the cool new things is 3D printed art,” explained Dancey. “Classic pieces of art but done with 3D printers, which is kind of mind-blowing when you see them. They’re amazing.”

The show will also feature everything from semi-precious stones to woodcarving. Dancey said the Ripley Ford entertainment stage will also be set up in the back alley to feature local musicians and artists from around the province.

“We just really appreciate all of the support we have from local businesses who sponsor this event,” Dancey said. Trail Tire and Royal LePage Realty are also offering their parking lots for space, as the alley was getting full due to the growing event.
