2025 Saskatchewan Amateur Golf Championships

Local kid to compete as first-ever amateur on home course

The 2025 Saskatchewan Amateur Golf Championships began Tuesday morning at the Humboldt Golf Club (HGC), and a local teen is looking to make his mark.

Humboldt’s Tryce Wallin will be competing in the event, his first time ever in the Sask. Am tournament.

At just 16 years old, Wallin will be one of the youngest members in the field, after playing with kids his age at last week’s Saskatchewan Junior Championships in Lloydminster.

“It’ll definitely be a different experience; I’m so used to kids my age. But it’ll be cool to see how it is to play with older people and see how they handle the game, and what their mental game is like. I feel a little more pressure to do better because there are definitely some better players here than what I’m usually used to,” he told northeastNOW.

“Getting to play at my home course this week, though, it makes me feel pretty comfortable because I play here usually at least once a day. I know pretty much everything about this course, so I can definitely use that as an advantage this week. The course also looks really nice, and it’s probably in the best condition I’ve ever seen it.”

Not only will Wallin be comfortable because he’s on his home course this week, but also because one of his competitors is very familiar.

Tryce’s father, Theran, will be in the mid-amateur (25 and over), and his caddie will be Tryce’s younger brother, Tylan, who also played with Tryce in last week’s juniors.

“It’s pretty cool to be able to play with my brother and my dad in these events. I’m so used to playing with my brother in every tournament, and now it’s cool that I can finally play with my dad in an event that he’s in. I don’t know if we could play together in the same group, but that’d be pretty cool if we did. I hope we do, because that’d be a really cool experience,” continued Tryce.

“Hopefully, I can beat him. I usually try and compete with my brother, but he always plays from different tees than me, so we can never really compare our scores. My dad and I will be straight up this week, though, so we’ll see how that works out. Hopefully, we’ll have lots of our other family out there to cheer us on. I just want to try and do my best, we have a bit of an advantage, so hopefully we can use that to perform our best.”

Almost 150 players will be in the field this year, through the Men’s and Women’s Amateur and Mid-Amateurs.

The Women’s Championships and Men’s Mid-Amateur will be played for three days over 54 holes, while the men’s amateur championship will have a cut after day three and conclude on Friday after 72 holes.

The men’s event has never been played in Humboldt in its 114-year history, while the women’s event was hosted by the HGC back in 2014.

“Ever since players started to show up weeks ago for a round or today during the practice round, there has been nothing but praise for the course. The greens are amazing, possibly the best ever in the history of the club. The staff has been incredible from Glenn (Wildeman, superintendent) down. We are very excited to host this event,” added HGC General Manager Corey Schweitzer.

“I just really like competition, and I was just really excited that it was at my home course, and I figured that even if I don’t do my best, I may as well give it a shot and have some fun with it. I think our course has earned its spot to be here, it’s in really good condition, and I’m really happy to see it like that,” Tryce concluded.

The defending mid-amateur champion is Prince Albert’s Danny Klughart.
