Nipawin Airport to undergo runway rehabilitation project

The Town of Nipawin will soon have some improvements to their airport.

Council approved a runway rehabilitation project at this week’s meeting.

Chief Administrative Officer Michele Sorensen said the decision to repair the runway was necessary.

“The runway is aging as all infrastructure does over time and requires surface repair and replacement,” Sorensen told northeastNOW. “This project will repair the aging infrastructure to ensure our runway and taxiway [are] in good repair and safe for incoming and outgoing aircraft.”

Sorensen said the scope of work will include milling and crack repairs on the primary runway, along with application of a fog seal coat over the entire runway and taxiway surfaces. The turnaround area will also be expanded.

“These improvements are designed to extend the life of the current pavement, enhance safety for aircraft operations, and position the airport to support future demand and development,” General Manager of Operations and Engineering Services Jamie Fast wrote in his Request for Decision to Council.

At Monday’s meeting, council awarded Covenant Construction Inc. the tender to complete the Nipawin runway rehabilitation project for $199,663.18 plus GST. The project is being funded by the Town of Nipawin and the provincial government’s Community Airport Partnership (CAP) Program on a 50-50 cost-shared basis.

Sorensen said the project is expected to begin in early September and should be finished within the month.

Council also awarded the 11th Avenue Water and Sewer Extension project to Gee Bee Construction.

“This project will support current and future development in the southeast area of Nipawin and facilitate future expansion south of town,” Sorensen explained.

The tender was awarded for just over $1.2 million.
