Lumsden beats Weyburn in U15 Baseball provincial final

With a stacked field of teams coming into the tournament, the hosting Prince Albert Royals were in tough at the U15 AA Tier 1 Provincials. Ultimately Prince Albert would fall short in the semi-finals, setting up a rematch of the Regina Baseball AA League finals as the Lumsden Cubs met the Weyburn Beavers in the final.

In the end, Lumsden would put on a dominant performance in the final game of the tournament 22-4, and they’ll represent Saskatchewan at the Western Canadian Championships.

Chairperson of the organizing committee Laura Munro-McFarlane said it was a lot of work to get the tournament put together, but everything went perfect except for a bit of misty rain at the end of the tournament.

“There was some volunteers that stepped forward from the Prince Albert Minor Baseball Association, kind of a pool of parents that chipped in to help out here, some people with just an interest in baseball. Obviously a lot of the parents and families associated with the team really pulled together and divided up tasks and conquered and yeah, they we just did a really good job of pulling together. This isn’t the first tournament that we’ve done. We hosted a provincial tournament a couple of years ago. So yeah, I knew it was a good group of people to work with.”

As for how they got there, both Weyburn and Lumsden were in the same pool and met each other during their second game of the tournament, and Weyburn won a tight 7-6 game. Weyburn went undefeated in the round robin, and Lumsden won both of their games after that.

In the other pool, the Prince Albert Royals, Saskatoon Contacts, and Western Dust Devils all went 2-1 through three games of round robin play, but ultimately it would be the Royals and the Dust Devils moving to the semi-finals.

Prince Albert met Lumsden in the semi final, and the Cubs got out to a 4-0 lead early in the game. Then Prince Albert rallied back to tie the game at four, but Lumsden Cubs Head Coach Kerry Dietz said his defence came up big to finish that one off.

“We’ve played PA in a tournament earlier this year and it was a 5-4 game for them, they came out on top. It was a battle of a game. So we knew what we were getting into when we were playing them here and, there was a tight one there. We got up four on them in the second inning and they battled back and our pitching kept us in the game.”

On the other side of things, Weyburn cruised past the Western Dust Devils to make it to the final. In their regular league, the Regina Baseball AA League, Weyburn and Lumsden met once during the regular season in which Weyburn won. They met again in the league final, and Lumdsen took the win.

Then Weyburn won again in the round robin of this tournament, setting up what could have been an electric finish to the tournament. Instead though, Lumsden’s bats came alive and put up a 22-4 score to finish the tournament.

“Our bats lit on fire on that game. When the bats fell silent, our defense always held us in games, and having nine guys that can pitch and guys that can play all over the field was our answer. When the bats got hot though, they were good games.”

Lumsden will be heading to the Western Canadian Championships in St. Albert in a month’s time.

On behalf of the organizing committee, Munro-McFarlane was incredibly thankful for the support and how smooth the tournament went.

“We got to welcome them to Prince Albert and show them the good aspects of the community and show them hospitality, and just listening to people, we had lots of positive feedback that they’re experiencing Prince Albert.”
