Most of Saskatchewan crop at normal stage of development

The latest Saskatchewan crop report shows rain that fell over the weekend through wide sections of the province proved helpful.

But not all benefited, according to Crops Extension Specialist with the Ministry of Agriculture Matthew Struthers.

“When you look at the rainfall map, lots of that rain fell down in the southwest and up into the Northwest as well. Those areas were just so dry, the rain just came too late, and for others, it just came at the right time,” he said. “For those very unfortunate producers, some didn’t come at all. So, we’re hoping this continues in the next few weeks and those who missed out on that rain will get some.”

As far as crop development, Struthers said it has all levelled out closer to normal.

In the east-central region, crops are in good condition overall. Bill Prybylski farms in the Willowbrook area, west of Yorkton. He said it’s not a bumper crop, but it’s good.

“Recent rains have given a lot of optimism that there will be a pretty good crop out there. We’ve been drier than normal, but the rains that have come have been quite timely,” he said. “The crop certainly has potential.”

Prybylski said his area received about three-quarters of an inch of rain on Sunday. He described it as a slow and steady rain.

“We were to the point where we were probably going to start seeing yield loss had that rain not come, so timing could not have been better for that rain that we did get on Sunday,” he said.

Because of the recent rain, Prybylski said they will be applying a second round of fungicide.

“Herbicides are just standard procedure on all our acres. We did apply fungicide on all our acres, and given the recent rain, we will likely be applying a second application of fungicide to our lentils for sure and possibly even the peas,” he added.

Prybylski said he will start combining next month.

“I think the middle of August to maybe the 20th of August, somewhere in that neighbourhood.”
