City plans

Deadline for input on the future of the city is on Friday

Jul 25, 2025 | 10:53 AM

Residents of Melfort don’t have much time left to give their opinions on two important documents.

They can give their feedback on the Strategic Plan and the Economic Development Action Plan until the end of the day Friday.

“The city is looking for input that will help council prioritize initiatives, assess alignment with community needs, and gauge the level of support for the plans,” said Director of Community Services Rob Lok. “Constructive suggestions for community improvement are also welcomed.”

Lok said the strategic plan gives a framework to guide decision making and resource allocation over the next five years, emphasizing economic growth, community development, environmental stewardship, enhanced infrastructure, and improved municipal services.

The Economic Development Action Plan, according to Lok, will guide the city’s economic development priorities over the next year or so.

“[That plan] is more focused on a number of readily identifiable, short-term, action items that align with key themes from engagement with council and the strategic plan.”

Lok said the feedback is vital, and it helps ensure the plans reflect the needs, values, and priorities of the community.

“Public input provides confirmation that we are heading in the right direction,” said Lok.

The city has received what Lok said are a “good number of responses so far.” He called the feedback encouraging and the thoughtful suggestions will be valuable for council.

“Overall, there seems to be support for the direction of the plans.”

The public input for both plans will be shared with council at the August Governance and Priorities Committee meeting for discussion. The city’s administration will begin implementing the plans should council approve them. The initiatives from the strategic plan would be prioritized for the 2026 budget.

Lok said the plan provides a vision and direction for the future and helps council and departments align their efforts toward common goals, allowing for more focused and consistent decision-making. The Economic Development Action Plan will help to provide direction and support to ensure economic growth and improve the quality of life for residents while enhancing the overall well-being of the broader community.

Have your say on the city’s Strategic Plan and the Economic Development Action Plan.
