Tobin Lake wants its own postal code

Jul 25, 2025 | 2:13 PM

The Resort Village of Tobin Lake is trying to solve a problem that will improve the mail service in the area and ultimately make federal politics a little less confusing during elections.

The resort village doesn’t have its own postal code. That means permanent residents choose whether to pick up their mail in Carrot River or Nipawin. The problem that leaves is no clear electoral boundary.

“We’ll have Randy Hoback [for MP] because they have a Nipawin address and then some have Cathay Waganttal because they have a Carrot River address. It’s been making things quite confusing,” said resort village CAO Nathalie Hipkins.

Council has been trying to find a solution for some time, Hipkins said. The area is starting to see an influx of young retirees moving to the community, so having a full post office would be ideal for residents. For now, however, the village is hoping to start with just a postal code.

The village met with Waggantall and learned that the first step to getting its own postal code is a petition to show support.

Copies of those petitions have been put at The Shorebird Inn, Tobin Lake Resort, the Hilltop Campground, Rusty Hook and at the village office.

To be eligible, people must have the village as a permanent address and be old enough to write their own name.

“It’s any age as long as you can sign the petition,” she said.

The petitions will be available for signatures until the end of August and then sent to the federal government.

Hipkins is confident that at some point, the village will have both a postal code and a post office.
