Locals Observations Help Shape the Future of Turtle Lake: Public Input Vital in New Study on Lake Conditions and Development Pressures

Residents, cabin owners, and visitors are invited to help shape the future of Turtle Lake as part of a comprehensive Lakeshore and Watershed Management Study now underway.

With visible impacts from algae blooms, rising concerns about shoreline development, and the low lake levels resulting from drought, the project is gathering scientific data on water quality, boating capacity, shoreline sustainability, and fisheries health – and just as importantly, it’s seeking local knowledge and community insight.

“The people who visit and live at Turtle Lake have important knowledge about changing conditions that may not be easily seen in a water sample or a lake activity survey.

This Study provides a critical opportunity for everyone who cares about Turtle Lake to share what changes they are seeing and ensure the things they love about the area are protected into the future,” said project team member, Brenda Wallace. “By blending science and community knowledge, we can ensure the recommendations from the study match the needs of the Lake, its residents, and for future generations.”

Turtle Lake has been studied each decade since the 1980’s. Trends in water quality, boating capacity, shoreland capability, and angling / fishery health are described on a project webpage found at www.wallaceinsights.com/TurtleLakeStudy. The webpage outlines study goals and opportunities for participating.

There are several ways people can get involved:

· Sharing observations and experiences through the online survey – https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/TurtleLakeStudy

· Mapping observed changes and noting valuable places (survey available at http://tiny.cc/w4np001) to create a community story map the evolves as people share their knowledge – https://arcg.is/0rC5Gf0

· Dropping in for a conversation at the Information Café to meet the study team, view information collected so far. The Café is scheduled for Sunday, August 10th at the Livelong Community Centre and runs from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
