Sask. athletes prepare to head across the country for 2025 Canada Summer Games

Athletes from across North Central Saskatchewan are honing their skills over the next couple of weeks as they gear up to head to the 2025 Canada Summer Games next month.

This year’s installment is in St. John’s, N.L. and will see over 4,000 athletes, coaches and managers from around the country make the trip to the east coast city. Saskatchewan announced who their sending to the games on Monday, with 488 athletes, coaches and managers heading to Newfoundland from 92 communities, and some hailing close to home.

The flag bearer for Saskatchewan was also announced yesterday, that being Regina dual-sport athlete Hayden Kot (Basketball and Volleyball), who said she was shocked to learn of the honour.

“I came out of our volleyball game, and when I saw a message from my basketball coach saying ‘CONGRATULATIONS’ I didn’t know what it was about at first. Then I read the full message, and I was just so happy. It’s such an honour to represent Saskatchewan this way.”

The Canada Summer Games will run from Aug. 8-25 and will feature 19 different sports, from baseball and cycling to swimming and track and field.

19 athletes and two managers will travel from Prince Albert to St. John’s, like Chase Lehner, Sawyer Elphinstone, and Tucker Prodaehl, who will play for the men’s lacrosse team, while Madison Kemp will be the lone representative on the women’s team.

The volleyball teams will see the majority of P.A. talent, with Thomas Cyr, Matt Lefebvre, and Rueben Veith playing on the men’s squad, and Team Canada star Abby Wasutyk will play for the women’s. Additionally, Matthew Lueck was named head coach of the Men’s Beach Volleyball team.
