Severe thunderstorm watch in effect for Melfort, Nipawin regions

Aug 8, 2025 | 12:23 PM

Numerous weather alerts, warnings and watches are currently in effect for the northeast area.

A severe thunderstorm watch has been issued by Environment Canada for both Melfort and Nipawin, as conditions are favourable for said development.

The main threats from the thunderstorms will be hail the size of toonies and wind gusts to 90km/h.

There is also a rainfall warning, with amounts expected to total 50 to 75mm by the time the rain ends Sunday morning.

Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads. Localized flooding in low-lying areas is possible. Heavy rainfall in combination with other weather factors, such as hail, wind and lightning, will make outdoor activities unsafe.

And finally, an air quality warning remains, as smoke is causing or expected to cause poor air quality and reduced visibility.

Air quality and visibility due to wildfire smoke can fluctuate over short distances and can vary considerably from hour to hour.
