Regina teens earn top prize at Premier’s Walleye Cup

Youth reigned supreme at the 37th annual Saskatchewan Premier’s Walleye Cup on the weekend.

A team of brothers with a combined age of 33 won the two-day event on Tobin Lake at Nipawin and District Regional Park.

Winston Stockdale and his brother Will, aged 18 and 15 respectively, were the grand prize winners.

The Regina duo caught 10 walleye with a combined weight of 98.42 pounds to win the grand prize, the bonus tournament-within-a-tournament, the first-place daily cash payout on day two, and the junior team championship, earning a grand total of $19,606.25.

Chad and Jace Trombley of Carrot River were second with a total combined weight of 89.47 pounds. They earned a grand total of $11,252.24 during the event.

Jason and Blaine Jones of Wapella earned third place honours with 87.71 pounds caught. They were first place after day one of the event, and earned $8,564.58 over the two days.

The mixed team champions were Brian Oestricher of Loon Lake and Kalynn Gillespie of Lloydminster, Alta., and they won a fire pit from Kevin’s Custom Ag for their two-day total of 73.31 pounds.

As mentioned, the Stockdales won the Junior Team Champions crown, winning a $250 Co-op Gift Card from Paslowski Baits. Asher and Ray Lamy of Nipawin were second place and won a $100 Fishing Hole gift card and hats.

The big fish on day one was caught by Kris Gaune of East St. Paul, MB., and Graham Edwards of Hamiota, MB., with a 11.14-pound walleye. Meanwhile, Lee Firth of Coalhurst, Alta., and Chad Rambo of Valler, MT. caught the biggest fish on day two at 12 pounds even.

In the boat parade, winners were Lyndon Hicks of Yorkton and Bradley Fidierchuk of Redvers, who took home a $500 Lake Country Co-op gift card. Kyle and Blaze Shipley of Martensville took second place and received a $250 gift card from Lake Country Co-op. The best decorated award went to Taylor Silva and Noah Tonn of Preeceville, and they received a two-night stay at Carrot River Inn and a $50 gift card from Gieni’s Restaurant.

The Trout Pond Championship was cancelled due to the weather.
