Saskatchewan’s NDP leader calls on government to lobby for an end to Chinese tariffs
Saskatchewan’s NDP Leader wants Premier Scott Moe to launch a diplomatic mission to end the Chinese tariffs on canola oil and meal, pork, and peas.
China sent shockwaves through the provincial economy with the announcement of a new 75.8 per cent tariff on canola, set to take effect today.
Carla Beck said the province should make use of its trade office in China to deal with the dispute.
“China is our second largest trading partner, and these tariffs have the potential to crush entire farms and communities,” Beck said. “What’s the point of paying millions of dollars for a trade office in China if we don’t use the thing?”
