Tisdale’s by-election for mayor will take place Nov. 12

Aug 26, 2025 | 12:20 PM

The Town of Tisdale has released more information about the process behind electing a new mayor.

Former mayor Roy Skoglund resigned earlier this month, citing the demands of the job and the low rate of pay as factors in his decision.

The Town revealed a list of answers to frequently asked questions on their social media pages. It said the date for the by-election was settled during a meeting last week. It was decided the by-election will be held Wednesday, Nov. 12, with an advanced poll being held Nov. 8.

Until that time, the current deputy mayor will be the acting mayor.

“Each year, there is a deputy mayor appointment schedule being adopted prior to the current year,” the City said in the release. “The deputy mayor acts as a secondary leader for the municipality, fulfilling the mayor’s duties when required and providing support in the overall governance of the community.”

For the months of August and September, Councillor Amanda Reynolds will serve as deputy mayor. Councillor Dean Janzen will serve in October and November, while Councillor Mike Hill will be the deputy mayor in December.

As part of the Local Government Election Act 2015, if a mayor resigns before the end of their term, a by-election must be held to fill the vacancy. The only exception is if the resignation takes place close to the end of their term.

The person elected in a by-election only serves for the unexpired portion of the original term. In this case, that would likely be through the fall of 2028.
