Residency seats in northeast

Medical residency seats opening in Nipawin and Melfort for 2026

Good news for two local communities as it comes to doctor training opportunities.

The provincial government and University of Saskatchewan’s College of Medicine is expanding physician training opportunities, with the Department of Academic Family Medicine adding two new residency training seats in both Melfort and Nipawin in 2026.

Health Minister Jeremy Cockrill said in a news release that the province is happy to support the addition of new training opportunities for medical residents in Saskatchewan.

“Expanding residency seats in [Melfort and Nipawin] and other locations in the province aligns with our commitment to improve access to healthcare in Saskatchewan and we encourage new residents to consider building their practice here in the future.”

The College of Medicine is offering 68 seats in the Canadian Residency Match System (CaRMS) in 2026 across the province. The government said the expansion builds on the new seats added in Humboldt, Moosomin, and Weyburn in 2022.

University of Saskatchewan College of Medicine Dean Dr. Sarah Forgi, MD said where learners train strongly impacts where they practice medicine.

“Continuing to grow training opportunities across the province is a priority for our college, and these new resident doctor positions will strengthen health care supports for people in the area.

In the 2025 CaRMS match earlier this year, 54 of the 147 residents who matched in Saskatchewan were local grads from the University of Saskatchewan College of Medicine.

“It is encouraging to see increased training opportunities for Melfort and hope the medical residents will be inspired to stay and build their future practice here,” Melfort Mayor Glenn George said in the release. “I am grateful to the provincial government for providing these new residencies to our community and I look forward to all the good things that are coming to the Northeast in health care.”

Melfort MLA Todd Goudy said they recognize and appreciate all the hard work doctors have done in the community and across Saskatchewan.

“With this announcement, we are excited to see more training and recruitment opportunities for physicians in Saskatchewan,” Goudy said.

Nipawin Mayor Marlon Zacharias is also thankful for the opportunity to have these training opportunities in his community.

“This announcement reflects a strong commitment from our provincial government to strengthening the health care system here in Nipawin,” Zacharias said. “As the Regional Hub of the Northeast, expanding training opportunities for future physicians will highlight the Exceptional by Nature philosophy that defines our community and we believe that once new doctors experience what Nipawin has to offer, they will choose to stay and build their careers here. We sincerely thank the provincial government for this investment in Nipawin’s health care future and look forward to its success.”

Carrot River Valley MLA Terri Bromm said the announcement is great news for the Town of Nipawin and surrounding area.

“With this addition of two new residency seats, we are building opportunities to expand patient care in rural communities.”

The new residency seats are expected to launch training July 1, 2026.
