Mustangs split weekend in final preseason matchup

Sep 14, 2025 | 11:42 PM

The Melfort Mustangs have completed their busy preseason week, which included four games against rival opponents.

Melfort began the week with a home-and-home set against the Nipawin Hawks on Monday and Tuesday.

The Mustangs won at home and lost on the road against Nipawin, facing the exact same fate on the weekend.

“I think the young guys coming in look really good. We’ve got a good week coming up here to help learn a good system and get the guys rolling, so everybody’s feeling pretty good and just getting eager to get the season started,” explained veteran forward Danton Cox.

“Even though it’s just the preseason, it always feels good to be back and competing again.”

The Stangs took on the Humboldt Broncos Friday and Saturday, once at home and once on the road.

After the Blue and Green fell 4-0 in Humboldt on Friday, the club took down the Broncos at the Northern Lights Palace on Saturday by a score of 3-2.

That capped the exhibition schedule as Melfort now looks forward to just one game on opening weekend.

The Mustangs will host the Nipawin Hawks Friday, Sept. 19th, as the organization will lift its second straight championship banner into the rafters.

“Our outlook is the same every year. We’re just gonna work hard and hope for nothing but the best. Obviously, I’d like to say we have a little advantage over everybody else, experience-wise, so hopefully that’ll help us out throughout the year,” Cox added.

“We’re just gonna be making sure everybody learns the system this week, gets it down pat, and then all get on the same page. Just get in a better flow state where you know where your linemates are and stuff like that.”
