Melfort Fire Hall hosting open house on Sunday

Oct 1, 2025 | 2:43 PM

The Melfort Fire Department is hosting the public at an open house at the fire hall on Sunday.

Fire Chief Leonard Whitney told northeastNOW the open house is usually held in October, which is also Fire Prevention Month. This year’s event is being held on Sunday, which is a change from past years when it was held on Thursday.

“We’re going to do our fire hall tours, and we’ll have some activities for the kids,” Whitney explained. “We’re also doing our auto extrication demo, and of course we’ll have lots of our firefighters there.”

Plus Industries will also be on hand to host a barbecue, with a burger and drink for $10.

Another attraction at the open house is the many pictures and articles about the fire department through the years. Whitney said Deputy Chief Doug Walsh has compiled a significant collection of the fire department’s history.

“It’s quite interesting to come and have a look at all the time and effort he’s put into keeping our history intact,” Whitney said. “It’s just amazing.”

The department will also be displaying their equipment that evening, from turnout gear to fire trucks and more. They will be using the new Jaws of Life in the auto extrication demonstration.

Whitney said they’re also running a recruitment drive during the month of October.

“If you’ve ever thought of possibly wanting to be a firefighter, it gives you an opportunity to come and have a look at the hall and some of our stuff and talk to some of our members.”

While the department has a decent complement of firefighters, Whitney said they could use up to seven more. He said a full 27-member crew would be a first for Melfort.

The open house is being held from 2 to 5 p.m.
