Out of division matchup

Mustangs set for home-and-home weekend against North Stars

Oct 3, 2025 | 5:19 PM

The Melfort Mustangs are set for a home-and-home matchup with the Battlefords North Stars this weekend, beginning tonight at the Northern Lights Palace.

These will be the first two of four scheduled meetings on the season, between the two clubs.

So far, the Mustangs are 2-1-1 on the year, with three of those four contests ending as one-goal games.

“We’re obviously tightening things up still here, as it’s still a little bit earlier on in the season, but I think with a lot of guys returning, we’re very used to the one-goal games. Last year, we had a lot of them, so we’re just helping the young guys out and helping them learn how to battle in those one-goal games, and I think we’ll be all good,” said forward Owen Nelson.

“I believe our offence is coming, we’re not worried about it, we have a lot of guys who have the ability to put the puck in the net. It’s all about growing pains, and we’re gonna get through it, and we’re gonna be able to put the puck in the net, so we’re not worried about it at all.”

Through their four games, Melfort has scored just 11 goals, the second-lowest mark in the league.

Now they’ll face a Stars team that has only given 10 goals, tied for the second-best mark in the league.

“Obviously, they’re a good team, just like us, so we gotta play hard. They’re gonna come with some speed, so we just gotta defend, do the little things right, win battles, and I think we’ll be all good from there,” Nelson added.

“Tonight’s game is very important, we love our home ice games, and we don’t like losing on our ice. We’re taking this one very seriously, just like we would any other game. Home ice, Friday night, in front of the fans, there’s nothing better, so we’re hoping to get the win.”
