Another one-goal game

Binner grabs shootout winner as Mustangs down Stars

For the third game in a row, the Melfort Mustangs needed extra time to decide a winner.

On this particular occasion, the Mustangs were hosting the Battlefords North Stars and eventually won 3-2 in a shootout, thanks to Kaleb Binner.

“I really didn’t know that I was going, to be honest with you, when I was told to get out there, I kind of blacked out for a little bit. I just remember all the times in practice I stayed out late, and I went back to the same move. I knew the ice was pretty crappy, so I wanted to shoot it, and I kind of froze him there, and it went in. I’m just happy we came away with the win,” Binner told northeastNOW.

“Last year, it was kind of a similar deal; we knew how to close out those one-goal games, two-goal games. It’d be nice to score a little more, but when we’re playing solid defensively and keeping the puck out of our zone, we’ll be happy with whatever the score is for us.”

Melfort had a solid first period, controlling most of the play, which led to a 1-0 lead.

After that, though, Battlefords started to put the pressure on, eventually jumping out to a 2-1 lead, which lasted till late in the third and final frame.

“We’re not going to hang our heads at the win there, we know we got a lot more work to do, and we’ve got to keep building. That’s the focus for these upcoming games, but we’ll take the win for sure,” Binner added.

Now, the Stangs are set to head to North Battleford on Saturday, hoping for the weekend sweep.

“We kind of know a little bit more what they’re about after just seeing them, so there are some things we’ve got to tighten up for sure. They like to score off the rush, so picking up guys on the back check is going to be a huge focus for us. Also, just being tough, that’s our motto, and it’s been that way since I got here two years ago, so if we can establish that early and kind of run with the pace of play and make them play to our level, I think we’ll be good to go,” concluded Binner.
