Mustangs comeback too little too late in Weyburn

Oct 11, 2025 | 2:27 AM

The Melfort Mustangs nearly pulled off a miraculous comeback on Friday night against the Weyburn Red Wings.

A bad start to the third period turned a 2-1 contest into a 5-1 deficit in a span of less than three minutes, as the game seemed over with 10 minutes to go.

But, Melfort slowly worked its way back as a power-play marker started a rally with nine minutes remaining to make it 5-2.

Two 6 on 5 goals (with the net empty) pushed the game back to a one-goal difference with a minute and 48 seconds left in the third, however, that’s ultimately how the game ended, as the Mustangs’ comeback attempt fell just short.

With the loss, which came in the first meeting between the Stangs and the Red Wings since last year’s finals, it dropped the Blue and Green’s record to 4-2-1.

Meanwhile, Weyburn is now a league-best 7 and 2.

Melfort will next play on Saturday when they travel down the highway to take on the Bruins in Estevan.

The match will end the first of two Southern Swings on the season for the Mustangs.

Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m., with the pregame show starting at 6:45 p.m. on 105 CJVR.
