Disappointing Efforts

Mustangs swept on southern swing

The Melfort Mustangs dug themselves another hole on Saturday night, and once again, it was ultimately too big to dig out of.

After dropping a 5-4 decision on Weyburn on Friday, Melfort travelled to Estevan to wrap up their southern swing.

Another slow start saw them in a 3-0 hole after two periods of play, and despite another comeback stretch, which saw them bring the game back to just a one-goal deficit, they fell short again.

“It’s something we’ve got to figure out within our room. When we get down or something bad happens, we’re having a real tough time stopping the bleeding right now. When we decide to turn it on, you can see these last two games; we’re able to do that, so we’ve got to find a way, whether it be mentally or physically, to turn that switch on a lot quicker,” said assistant coach Clarke Huxley.

The Mustangs closed the gap to 3-2 midway through the final frame, before Estevan responded with a pair of late goals, both of which came on the power play.

The Blue and Green continued to have trouble defending their net front against the Bruins, as the vast majority of their weekend goals against came in the danger areas.

“Definitely not the result we wanted this weekend, and as upset as we may be as coaches, the guys are probably just as upset, too, so we’ve got a lot to want to work on, clearly. We’ll get back to the drawing board in practice this week and get back to it next weekend against Yorkton,” Huxley concluded.

The Blue and Green are now off from game action until Friday when they play host to the Yorkton Terriers.
