Mustangs host Terriers, add young defenceman

Oct 17, 2025 | 6:01 PM

The Melfort Mustangs are hoping to get things right this weekend in a home-and-home set against the Yorkton Terriers.

Last weekend, Melfort got swept on its southern swing, allowing 10 goals in two games, after allowing just 12 in its first six.

“We’re definitely cleaning up the D zone this week, just fixing our positional play, and just tightening it up down there… obviously we want to have a good weekend, and go 2 and 0, that’s the goal. We don’t really have anything else in mind, just go out there and work hard to get four points,” said Mustangs’ defenceman Cole Unger.

“We’re back-to-back champions, so obviously every team is going to be trying to hunt us down and take the win, so we’re just gonna have to come out fighting… we just got to play confident and make plays. They’re a fast-paced team, but so are we, so making plays, trying to put the puck in the net, and being good in the defensive zone is key.”

Tonight’s game will take place at the Northern Lights Palace, before shifting to Yorkton tomorrow.

This evening will be the first meeting of the season between these two clubs, since the Stangs swept the Terriers in the second round of last year’s playoffs.

The Blue and Green will have a new face on their roster, as they added 2007-born defenceman, Roman Maudie, late yesterday in a trade with the Drumheller Dragons.

Maudie, who was acquired for a player development fee, has just five games of Junior A experience, all coming this season, in which he registered a single assist.

Puck drop between Melfort and Yorkton today is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
