Hawks look to snap road skid before 10-day break

The Nipawin Hawks will travel to the Battlefords Tuesday to take on the North Stars before the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) club gets a 10-day hiatus.

Nipawin was last in action on Saturday, the team suffered a 5-1 loss in Flin Flon, the fourth consecutive road loss after the Hawks started with four straight victories away from the Centennial Arena. Head Coach Tad Kozun said his group has had a couple days to reorganize a gameplan ahead of the first meeting between the two teams this season.

“We have had a couple good days of practice to regroup and try to get back to playing Hawks hockey,” Kozun said after the team’s gameday meeting. “The message is, we have nothing to save for, we get a nice break after tonight, so we will be prepared and give it our all to get back in the win column away from home.”

Nipawin is sitting in first place in the SJHL’s Sherwood Division but has struggled lately. After winning seven of the first eight games, the Hawks are 2-4-1 in their last seven games. With nine wins already this season, Kozun said despite the small slide over the last couple weeks, he said the strong start allows the club to work through some adversity.

“With the strong start we had that allows some leeway for stretches like this. We are not satisfied right now but we know it’s a long season and there is going to be ebbs and flows all year. If we can get the win tonight, that’s our 10th of the year and we’d be very happy with that after our schedule was complete and we looked ahead to this break,” he said.

Nipawin has struggled with the North Stars in recent years, the Battlefords won all four games between the two last year and have only beaten them twice in the last five years.

Faceoff is set for 7:30 p.m. at the Access Communications Centre, the pregame show on 750 Beach Radio will be on the air 15 minutes prior to puck drop.
