Aspen Power Station generating $500-million+ locally as project reaches halfway mark

Nov 6, 2025 | 5:22 PM

Construction of the Aspen Power Station near Lanigan, has already generated half a billion dollars locally, in just the first half of the project’s construction.

According to SaskPower, a total of $558 million has been committed to 189 Saskatchewan businesses, including $263 million to 21 Indigenous-owned businesses and $29.5 million to nine women-owned businesses.

“The Aspen project is well underway, and we have already exceeded the procurement targets that were set,” said Sean Wilson, Legislative Secretary for the Minister Responsible for SaskPower. “This was made possible because all the construction contracts went to Canadian companies, and 18 of 19 contracts went to Saskatchewan companies. Every effort has been made to ensure local opportunity and local investment.”

The project, which began construction in the spring of 2024, has an average of 550 workers on site each day, with a peak of more than 700 expected this coming spring.

Fifty per cent through the design and procurement of the project, a total of 1.34 million person-hours have already been spent on the job.

“Aspen Power Station will be a crucial part of SaskPower’s grid for decades to come,” said Rupen Pandya, SaskPower President and CEO. “When the plant comes online, it will provide the reliable, affordable power our customers, communities and businesses need to grow and thrive.”

Aspen, a 370-megawatt (MW) combined-cycle turbine natural gas facility, will be similar to the company’s Chinook and Great Plains power stations.

It will also have the added feature to operate in simple-cycle mode, which will provide the added flexibility of ramping up quickly to meet sudden spikes in electricity demand.

The plan is to have the station fully built and operating in 2027. For more information regarding the project, you can visit the SaskPower website.
