Better Effort

Step in right direction despite shutout loss to Hawks

While the Melfort Mustangs didn’t get the result they wanted on Friday night, falling 3-0 to the Nipawin Hawks, there was a positive outlook from coaches.

The Mustangs controlled more of the play, especially during the first period, but just couldn’t solve Gage Roberts, who made 28 saves for the shutout.

“We talk a lot about process, and we don’t worry too much about the results, so I think it was a step in the right direction. We’re never happy with the loss, but we outplayed them at times, and I thought above all, our work ethic was there. I said to some of the guys that if we play like that every day, then we’re gonna win more than we lose,” explained assistant coach Clarke Huxley.

“We just gotta build on it every single game, and don’t stay flat lined with our effort, because there’s always room to grow. If we do that, we can really start to rattle some wins off and get some chemistry going.”

There were chances for Melfort to score on Friday, which included six power-play opportunities.

The hope is that more pucks will find the back of the net on Saturday, when the Stangs host the La Ronge Ice Wolves.

“We worked on a lot of personnel changes, with guys coming in and off the power play, but we’re just sticking with her. I thought we had some chances, but their goalie just played really well. We got to bury those though, because they don’t come often, so just got to make sure we’re capitalizing,” Huxley added.
