Hawks cash in on Millionaires for third time this season

The Nipawin Hawks have defeated the Melville Millionaires for the third time this Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) season following a 4-2 win Tuesday.

Playing in Melville for the final time this year, the Hawks jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period on route to the team’s 12th win of the season. Noah Derouin and Finley Radloff each scored in the first frame. Derouin has three goals; Radloff now has four this year. Nipawin is now 11-0 on the year when scoring first in games and 10-0 when leading after the first period.

Melville cut the lead in half in the second period and tied the game late in the third as the home team sought their first victory over the Hawks this year. Nipawin responded by getting the game winning goal from newcomer Hudson Gainer – his first in the SJHL.

“There was a shot off the crossbar I am pretty sure,” he said after the game when describing what he saw on the game-winning play. “It ended up going to [Ashton] Tait and he passed it back to me. Nobody was in front of me, so I walked down, ripped it and got lucky. I was super pumped, I didn’t even know what was happening.”

Will Whitter added a late powerplay goal to cap the scoring and give the Hawks a two-goal win. The other three matchups between the two teams were 3-2.

Gainer was acquired from the Drumheller Dragons of the Alberta Junior Hockey League earlier this month. The 2007-born defenceman from Medicine Hat has fit right in with the Hawks group he said.

“It’s a lot of fun, meeting the new guys, they are awesome to me, treat me well. It was awesome coming here,” Gainer said.

Whitter now has nine goals this season. Gage Roberts made 26 saves in the Hawks’ net for the win.

Nipawin will now prepare for the Warman Wolverines on Saturday at home. Gainer said the team will enjoy Tuesday’s win and begin focusing on Warman over the rest of the week.

“We have to go in and not take them lightly,” he said of the 11th place Wolverines. “Work hard in practice these next few days and be ready to go.”

Faceoff is set for 7 p.m. for the first-ever meeting at Centennial Area between Warman and Nipawin. Nipawin beat Warman 6-1 earlier this year on the road.
