A bittersweet announcement from the Town of Nipawin.

Chief Administrative Officer Michele Sorensen has announced her retirement, effective April 30, 2026. Sorensen said that it gives time for council to recruit a replacement as the position has now been advertised .

“It feels happy, and scary, and all of the above,” Sorensen told northeastNOW. “I’m looking forward to slowing down a little bit, but the Town has been such a big part of my life for so many years that I’m going to miss it.”

Sorensen has worked for the Town of Nipawin in a variety of capacities for 27 years. She began as a contracted administration employee in the Economic Development & Tourism Department. After many years in the economic development fold, she moved on to office clerk, confidential secretary, legislative services officer, and ultimately into her current role.

During her time, the Town of Nipawin has undergone a number of changes and improvements. Sorensen said one of the largest updates during her time was the development of the Water Treatment Plant project.

“That was a huge investment in the town, and it was a big project.”

Other memorable developments included the collaboration with surrounding municipalities in constructing the Nipawin Heliport, and the celebration of NIpawin’s 100th birthday this past summer.

Sorensen said the community has certainly expanded over her 27-year tenure, including the commercial sector, with the development in the southern part of town with the Co-op, Tim Hortons, and McDonalds.

“There’s just been a lot of modernization,” explained Sorensen.

She thanked everyone she has worked with over the years, and the community for their support during her time with the Town of Nipawin.

Sorensen was praised for her dedication to making NIpawin a better place. In a news release, Mayor Marlon Zacharias said Sorensen’s “commitment, leadership, and passion for Nipawin have left a lasting mark on our municipality and those who have had the pleasure of working alongside her.”

Zacharias also thanked Sorensen personally for her support during his tenure as mayor.

“Over her 27-year career, Michele has faced challenges head-on, celebrated successes with grace, and made a positive, lasting impact on our community,” Zacharias said. “Her professionalism and dedication will be greatly missed.”

As for her future, Sorensen said she plans to spend more time with her family, including her grandchildren, while squeezing in some travel as well.
