‘Tis the Season: Local Christmas-themed events in full swing

Christmas is fast approaching, and many communities across the northeast are busy with events highlighting the season.

In Melfort, the Christmas Castle is open at the Historic Post Office through Dec. 21.

You can enjoy the decorated trees and entertainment nightly, with proceeds going to the Historic Post Office Advisory Group’s effort to preserve and restore the building.

-The Melfort and District Museum’s fifth annual Christmas Village is open Dec. 3 to 23 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

There are drive-thru nights on Wednesdays, with walk-through nights Thursdays to Saturdays, plus Dec. 22 and 23.

You can enjoy photos with Santa, apple cider, caroling, and a bonfire.

-The fifth annual Melfort Christmas Lights Tour is being held at the Melfort Campground Dec. 5 to 22.

You can drive through the campground to take in all the light displays, with all proceeds going to non-profit groups running the gate, including the St. Brieux School Senior SRC, Covenant Church for the Food Bank, Rotary Club, Melfort Cooperative Daycare, and Meskanaw Ethelton 4-H Beef Club.

-You can Skate with Santa at the Northern Lights Palace Dec. 14 from 1 to 2:30 p.m.

The event will feature music, hot chocolate, and treat bags.

You’re asked to bring an unwrapped toy or food or cash donations for the Salvation Army Christmas Hamper Program.

-The City of Melfort’s Holiday Lights and Twinkle Tour event is being held Dec. 22 from 6 to 8 p.m.

You can nominate a house that “lights up the community with holiday cheer,” and the City updates their map of twinkle tour houses weekly.

Register your house for a chance to win one of three $100 local gift cards.

Nominations are open until Dec. 21.

In the Town of Tisdale, the Christmas Tree Lighting at Town Square is coming up Friday, Dec. 12.

There will be sleigh rides, caroling, and pictures with Santa, plus hot chocolate and treat bags courtesy of Riverside Co-op.

Sleigh rides are $5 per rider, and it is first come, first served.

The Nipawin Winter Lights are being held at Nipawin & District Regional Park Dec. 5, 12, and 19 from 6 to 9 p.m., and Dec. 24 from 6 to 11 p.m.

The drive-thru light display is a hit each year, and any donations will go to the non-profit volunteers who help keep the event running smoothly.

Watson is best known for their giant Santa Claus statue, and their 94th annual Santa Claus Day starts on Friday, Dec. 5.

“Festive Friday” events start at 6:30 p.m.

Kids activities, a turkey shoot, and a grab and go food booth are open at the Civic Centre Main Hall.

New Horizons is hosting Santa’s Market with multiple vendors.

You can bring your own device and have a free picture with Santa at Affinity Credit Union.

Along Main St. you can take in sleigh rides, a bonfire, a Stuff the Bus event, tour the museum and local stores, with the tree lighting at 8:45 on the Civic Centre lawn, and fireworks at 9 at the corner of Main St. and Thacyk Ave.

“Santa Saturday” will start with a pancake breakfast at 8 hosted by McNab Regional Park with a silver collection at the door.

Christmas displays will be featured at the Museum from 10-2.

The Arena will host free public skating from 10:30 to 12:30.

Watson School will host a free movie from 1 to 2 p.m., and the 30th annual Supper with Santa will open at 5 at the Watson Civic Centre. It’s $15 for adults, $10 for kids 12 and under, and a family with school-age children can eat for $40. Doors open at 5 with entertainment to follow, and supper is at 6.

Santa Day at the Porcupine Plain Community Hall starts at 11 a.m.

You can get pictures with Santa, there is a Co-op Kids Club activity and trailer rides, and a tradeshow and bucket draws are also being held.

A soup and sandwich lunch by the Porcupine Plain Healthcare Auxiliary will be held from 11-2.

The Arborfield Community Hall will host Santa Claus Day on Friday, Dec. 5.

A roast beef supper will take place from 5 to 6 p.m.

Adults can eat for $20, kids 5 to 12 for $10, and preschoolers eat free.

Families can dine for $70.

A light parade will follow at 7 p.m. and there will also be a turkey shoot and games.

You can visit with Santa and take pictures in the hall after the parade.
