Mustangs suffer late loss again in first meeting with Broncos

Dec 13, 2025 | 3:22 PM

The Melfort Mustangs were once again in a position to earn some points on Friday night; however, they faltered late, resulting in their third straight loss.

Melfort played host to the Humboldt Broncos for the two clubs’ first meeting of the season, and controlled most of the game, as they were either up or tied nearly all the way through.

Problems didn’t occur until the final five minutes of regulation, when the Broncos tied the game at two with just 4:06 remaining on the clock in period three.

With a tie game, the contest was still anybody’s to win, and the Mustangs had the advantage as they were at home.

Unfortunately, however, Humboldt used the tying goal as momentum and took the lead for the first time all night, making it 3-2 with just two minutes and five seconds left.

Now, the pressure was on the Blue and Green, as they found themselves behind, something they hadn’t felt previously on Friday.

With the net empty, the Stangs pressed for the equalizer, but an empty net goal by the Green and Gold with 54 seconds left sealed it, giving the visitors the 4-2 victory.

Melfort will now have to go on the road to wrap up a home-and-home set for the second straight week, and hope to split the series, trying to avoid a fourth straight loss and fall even further behind the current eight playoff teams.

The Mustangs will enter the rivalry contest at the Elgar Petersen Arena in Humboldt, which begins at 7:30 p.m., a season-worst four games below .500.
