Mustangs’ late comeback fuels much-needed OT win in Humboldt

The Melfort Mustangs had a back-and-forth weekend with one of their most hated rivals, Friday and Saturday.

Melfort was in a home-and-home set with the Humboldt Broncos, the first meetings of the season.

The Mustangs had a chance to win at home on Friday, but suffered a late comeback loss.

On Saturday, meanwhile, on the road, the script seemed flipped, as it was the Stangs who were down late and needed some magic in the clutch.

They got it, as down 2-1 with less than four minutes to play, captain Zayden Sadlemyer tied it with a power-play goal, sending the game to overtime.

Then, in the extra frame, it was Kaleb Binner who played overtime hero, giving the Blue and Green the win.

“That third period and overtime was the most desperate, consistent, hard-working team effort that we’ve had, and honestly, that was just the message all game. Stick with it, stay confident, and trust that there was no way we were gonna let it slip away. It was great to see us get it done,” explained assistant coach Clarke Huxley.

“Humboldt isn’t in our division, but they’re a great rival. The spirit of the rivalry is that historically we’re two good teams, so every year the games are really solid. I actually think it’s the first time I’ve won in this building, so it feels good.”

With the victory, Melfort snapped a three-game losing streak and shed a lot of weight off their backs in what felt like a must-win game.

The hope now is to close off 2025 with some more wins, as they have three games left before the Christmas break.

“Sum of everything that’s been going on, I feel like we’ve been playing the right way for a good chunk of it, and not getting rewarded, but we just stuck with it. I don’t think we wavered very much at all, and the guys put in pretty close to a full 60, and they stuck with it. We got a bit of a lucky bounce, but that’s the result when you work hard, so nice to see it work out that way for us,” Huxley added.

“A huge win for sure, but we’re looking at the standings too, and we’re not ignoring where we are, and I don’t think it’s where we should be. I think we’ve underachieved a little bit, and I think definitely it is a step in the right direction, so hopefully, we can kind of get these next three games on our side and start rolling into the new year.”
