Nipawin earns split in Kindersley

The Hawks got back in the win column Sunday afternoon and salvaged the weekend in Kindersley.

The Hawks dropped an uninspired 2-1 game Saturday versus the Klippers but rebounded in the second game winning 5-2.

Nipawin opened the scoring on the road in both games, but Sunday the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) club was able to secure the victory. Konnor Watson gave Nipawin a 1-0 lead in the first period with his team leading 16th goal of the year. Tiernan Ryan notched his fourth career goal, Will Whitter’s 11th goal of the season turned out to be the game winner.

With a 3-0 lead the Hawks sat back allowing the Klippers back in the game after back-to-back Kindersley goals.

Leading 3-2 to start the third period, returning 20-year-old forward Braeden Jockims scored his first goal since returning from the North American Hockey League (NAHL). The Saskatoon product set up Jaxen Smyth for an empty net goal late to cap the scoring and his two point period. It’s the first win for the Hawks since Jockims returned three games ago.

“It feels really good to get back in the win column here, especially so close to the Christmas break, especially against such a good team and a very physical team. It’s just good to get the two points,” he said after the game.

Jockims scored 15 goals in 28 games in the SJHL before advancing to the Western Hockey League and NAHL for a season and a half. He added it was nice to get his first goal back after several chances this week.

“It feels really good,” he said. “Great play from Karks [Mason Karakochuk] to get it to [Eric] Hoiness in front and I just buried the rebound.”

The Hawks returned home in third place in the SJHL standings halfway through the campaign. Nipawin’s 18 victories this year has already surpassed last seasons total of 17.

Next up for the Hawks is a home game against La Ronge on Wednesday. Faceoff is 7 p.m.
