Muenster ballplayer named Best Pitcher in Germany

Muenster native and former Pittsburgh Pirates draft pick, Logan Hofmann, found himself pitching in Germany this summer, and he did not disappoint.

Hofmann was recently named the Best Pitcher of the Deutsche Baseball Liga (DBL) as a member of the Heidenheim Heidekopfe.

“It worked out well that I was able to get an opportunity to play over there, and the season as a whole was definitely great for my confidence. I think this is the best my command, my velocity, and the movement on my pitches have been since my best year in the minors, which was back in 2021,” Hofmann told northeastNOW.

“It’s definitely a cool award to win. I think back to high school, Team Saskatchewan, College, and even in the minor leagues, winning awards was pretty cool, but this is one that I’ll definitely remember. To be the best pitcher in the German baseball league, it’s not really a popular thing to win, but it’s a pretty cool accomplishment to be able to go over there in my first year and win that award.”

Hofmann and Heidenheim ended up winning the DBL championship, with Hofmann putting up impressive numbers.

Those numbers included a sub-one earned-run-average (ERA) in the regular season and a sub-three ERA in the playoffs, along with just 28 walks in 122 innings, and more than a strikeout-per-inning, with 150 in total.

While Hofmann’s performance is likely good enough to get him back to North American baseball, and maybe even work his way back up through the minor leagues, returning to Germany seems just as enticing.

“I think it would be a cool opportunity to play even higher in Europe or come back closer to home, but Hiedenheim just treats their players so well, and the competition is still really good. They want you to experience Europe, and we only play on weekends, so I quite enjoyed the relaxed schedule,” he added.

“I wanted to be able to play high-level baseball, but also tour around and get to see different parts of the world. I just want to experience the world before I get into working a full-time job. I’m also helping coach with the Saskatoon Berries back home in the Spring, so that could be my next step too.”
