Going for the Sweep

Mustangs finally beat Hawks

Dec 20, 2025 | 2:47 PM

For the first time this season, the Melfort Mustangs have won a game against the Nipawin Hawks.

Prior to Friday night, the Mustangs were 0 and 3 against the Hawks this season.

Last night in Melfort, though, it was the home team who picked up the 4-1 victory.

“Division rival, what can I say, they’re always good games when we meet, and we knew that coming in. It was going to be tight, and I’m just proud of the guys for the way they kept their composure. We went out and played a really hard first, and then in the second, we let off a little bit, but in the third period, we really responded. I’m proud of this group right now, we’re starting to figure it out, and we’re turning the corner, so I love to see it,” explained forward Kaleb Binner.

Both teams will now meet in Nipawin on Saturday to complete the home-and-home set and wrap up the 2025 portion of the schedule.

Following tonight’s contest, the two clubs will enter their nearly two-week-long Christmas break.

“It’s huge if we can carry this momentum over and win both; that would be three in a row for us, and we’re just building confidence. Step by step, we’re getting there, and it’s good to see, because we love winning, so it’s awesome,” Binner added.

“I think if we play the exact same way we did, we’ll be successful. We were hard in the dirty areas, and they didn’t have much to work with, so if we bring that energy to a small rink like Nipawin, I think we’ll be great.”

Puck drop from the Cage is set for 7 p.m.
