Year in Review: Nipawin Heliport grand opening celebrated

Dec 25, 2025 | 12:00 PM

A project that was years in the making came to fruition in 2025 in Nipawin.

The Nipawin Heliport became operational in May, and a grand opening ceremony was held in July.

The Twin Lakes District Planning Commission TLDPC), made up of representatives of surrounding communities, spearheaded the project. They include the towns of Carrot River, Choiceland, and Nipawin, the villages of Codette and White Fox, and the Rural Municipalities of Moose Range, Nipawin, and Torch River, and the Resort Village of Tobin Lake.

TLDPC Chair Jerry Kindrat told northeastNOW in May that the project was a major achievement.

“It reflects our commitment to building safer, stronger communities through strategic partnerships and smart planning,” Kindrat said. “We’re proud to have been part of making this vision a reality.”

Manager of Clinical Services at Nipawin Hospital Amber Barrie said the addition of the heliport at the Nipawin Hospital means the most critical patients will have timely access to the urgent care they need.

Nipawin’s Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) Michele Sorensen said the heliport is a game-changer.

“It is very exciting to have the heliport open and to be able to provide such a vital, potentially life-saving service to our residents,” Sorensen said.

According to Sorensen, the project is the result of the stakeholders in the area working together to make the heliport a reality.

The idea for a heliport in Nipawin came about after the tragic Humboldt Broncos bus crash south of Nipawin in 2018. Fundraising for the project began in the fall of 2023, while the sod was turned in the summer of 2024.

Sorensen said the TLDPC saw it as an opportunity to work together on a project that will benefit residents of the entire area.
