Year in Review: Melfort’s Luthi completes major marathons

Dec 29, 2025 | 10:33 AM

A Melfort athlete completed the seventh of seven major marathons in 2025.

Robyn Luthi finished the Sydney Marathon in September, completing the final Abbott World Marathon Major.

Luthi’s performance was inspiring, not only because she ran the majors, but because of her time in Sydney. She finished with a time of 2:56:34, which was seventh in her age group and number 47 for all women in the marathon. The run also marked her fourth sub three-hour marathon.

“I came in very undertrained for this race, I did not have a good training cycle at all,” Luthi told northeastNOW after her performance. “I actually debated not even coming to the race a week before I was supposed to leave, but I’m glad I went.”

Luthi said the race was very challenging due to its hilly terrain but was thankful she arrived well ahead of the race to adjust to the 16-hour time difference. She added it is one of the most beautiful finishes as participants run to the Sydney Opera House.

Her goal is to run a sub-2:50 marathon, and that means having to train during the winter, which is not optimal. That was her goal heading into Sydney, but with the training challenges she endured Luthi didn’t think she’d even approach that time. However, she was just over six minutes off the sub-2:50 pace.

Luthi qualified for the World Age Class Championship in Cape Town, South Africa in May. She believes South Africa and Shanghai will become the next major marathons in future years.

Current majors include Sydney, New York, Chicago, Boston, Tokyo, London, and Berlin.
