Zacharias discusses 2025, 2026

Mayor of Nipawin outlines highlights of 2025, what to expect in 2026

It was a monumental year for the Town of Nipawin.

Residents’ past and present gathered in the community in July to celebrate Nipawin’s 100th anniversary.

Mayor Marlon Zacharias said the celebration was a highlight for Nipawin in 2025.

“It was a great opportunity and a great year for us to celebrate the community and its history over the last 100 years, and what it’s going to look like going forward into the next 100 years,” Zacharias told northeastNOW.

He said it was great seeing everyone come back to celebrate the occasion.

Another important event in Nipawin this year was the grand opening of the Heliport, a project spearheaded by the Twin Lakes District Planning Commission (TLDPC). Zacharias said the TLDPC worked very hard over the last few years to make the project a reality.

“We actually celebrated the grand opening over the summer, it was very well attended and very well appreciated by the community and everybody else involved.”

Zacharias said council and administration are currently undergoing the 2026 budget process, trying to keep spending conservative while still maintaining services, infrastructure, and assets. He believes 2026 will be a year in which the Town maintains what they have while making a few upgrades here and there.

“Making sure that we maintain it with all of the increased costs we’ve had over the last year or two,” Zacharias explained. “Unfortunately, nothing is getting any cheaper for us, and we’re doing our best to make sure we don’t end up in the same position as some other communities and municipalities right now, where they haven’t had the long-term planning in place [very well]…and they’re seeing some pretty major [property tax] increases all over across the province.”

Zacharias wished everyone a happy and safe new year heading into 2026.
