Humboldt District Health Foundation pledges to build heliport

The Humboldt District Health Foundation (HDHF) has committed to fundraising for a new onsite heliport.

An HDHF news release said the Saskatchewan Health Authority has prioritized the need for a Transport Canada-certified heliport to be built onsite at the Humboldt District Health Complex.

“Both the Saskatchewan Health Authority and the Ministry of Health have endorsed the commencement of fundraising for the heliport project,” the release stated.

The foundation said STARS Air Ambulance began landing at the Humboldt airport rather than the temporary onsite landing pad at the hospital back in June.

“With continued residential development surrounding the Health Complex, the former landing location no longer met required safety standards,” the release said.

Funding heliports for acute care facilities in the province is the responsibility of the local community or hospital foundation.

“While a final project cost is not yet available — as tendering cannot begin until a fundraising commitment is made — based on similar projects across the province, the Foundation is committing to fundraising up to $1 million toward this essential project.”

The Nipawin heliport project that was completed in 2025 was spearheaded by the Twin Lakes District Planning Commission, made up of representatives from surrounding communities. Fundraising for the heliport in Melfort was undertaken by the North Central Health Care Foundation.

“For 40 years, donors have helped ensure that patients in our community have access to the care they need, when they need it most,” explained the HDHF release. “An onsite heliport is a continuation of that commitment — helping critically ill or injured patients reach specialized, life-saving care as quickly as possible.”

The foundation is also reviewing the feasibility of CT services in Humboldt. That review is progressing through “an established provincial review process and aligns with the Ministry’s annual service planning and budgeting cycle.”

The release added that the foundation remains deeply grateful for the trust and generosity of donors, and together they are building the legacy of care that will serve the community today, and for generations to come.
