Nipawin makes trip to Battlefords to face North Stars

Jan 6, 2026 | 11:54 AM

The Hawks are back on the road Tuesday heading to North Battleford for a showdown with the North Stars in Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) action.

Nipawin has an overtime win against the North Stars this year and a home ice loss. The Hawks have won two in a row, including a 3-2 overtime win on Saturday in La Ronge following the Christmas break.

“I thought it was sloppy at times coming back for the first game, working some kinks out as we had a few different guys in the lineup,” Kozun said. “The first period was a little slow at times, the second period their goalie played really well. We had a chance to blow that game open, but we didn’t. We stuck to the game plan and got the job done in overtime,” said Head Coach Tad Kozun.

The North Stars and Hawks are separated by just three points in the standings. The Battlefords have also had Nipawin’s number in recent years. In the last half-decade, the Hawks have just three wins versus the North Stars. Last season, the Battlefords won every game of the season set. Kozun said after winning 7-6 at the Access Communications Centre in the Hawks’ first meeting, he expects a different style game Tuesday.

“The last time we were there it was a shootout with 13 goals. I expect a much different hockey game tonight. We have to make sure we are structured with what we are doing, have strong details and habits. They are a team that’s on a good run right now, so we must be prepared for it and do what it takes to win this game,” Kozun added.

Nipawin will have 19-year-old centreman Ashton Tait back in the lineup and 20-year-old forward Brendan Olson returns from the Viking Cup.

Faceoff is set for 7:30 p.m.. The pregame show on 750 Beach Radio will start at 7:15 p.m.
