Mustangs, Ice Wolves look to end losing streaks in Wednesday night matchup

Jan 14, 2026 | 1:08 PM

One must rise, and one must continue to fall on Wednesday, when the La Ronge Ice Wolves visit the Melfort Mustangs.

The pair of teams are both currently on multi-game losing streaks, with one such streak set to end this evening.

Melfort is losers of their last five, while La Ronge hasn’t won in eight straight games.

“There are a lot of lessons that you can learn from a streak like this and from the weekend we just had. There were some positives in there, but I think for the most part, we just have to have a memory of a goldfish and just forget about heading into tonight,” said Mustangs’ netminder Madden Mulawka.

“We have a mentality where we’re never going to quit, and I think these last two games we maybe thought we should have had them going in, and obviously that didn’t end up being the case. Moving forward, I think that was a good wake-up call, and hopefully, it’s lit a fire under us.”

The Stangs fell in both of their contests over the weekend, being blown out 8-1 in Yorkton on Friday, before suffering another big loss on Saturday, dropping a 6-1 decision by the visiting Battlefords North Stars.

What’s going well for the Blue and Green, however, at least heading into Wednesday’s game, is that they’ve had success against the Ice Wolves this season.

In three meetings, Melfort is 3 and 0, including an 8-1 victory of their own the last time La Ronge was in town.

“We can’t take any team for granted, so we’re just going to prepare the same way as we would any other game and go into it and hopefully get the two points. We definitely have to be hard to play against, and as long as we bring the physicality against La Ronge and try to give them some bumps and bruises, we should be able to use that momentum to score some more goals,” Mulawka concluded.

“I think as a group, we still need to come together and work on putting the puck in the net. Obviously, though, there’s some stuff I need to clean up on my end too, so I can help the boys out, and hopefully, if I can help them out a bit more, they can get some more goals.”

Puck drop from the Northern Lights Palace is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
