Wednesday Night Win

Mustangs, Mushumanski get monkeys off their backs

The Melfort Mustangs snapped a five-game skid on Wednesday with a 4-1 win over the visiting La Ronge Ice Wolves.

Melfort dominated a majority of the play and had a perfect penalty kill, leading to the victory.

They also had one of their players break through for the first time in a Mustangs uniform.

“We all knew coming into tonight that we had dug ourselves a big hole coming off the Christmas break and needed a big win. Everybody in our room is just really happy, and we hope to keep that going,” said forward Dru Mushumanski.

“Obviously, it was great to get my first goal with the team; it’s been a long time coming. Anytime you join a new club, you want to make an impact right away, and obviously, I’ve been struggling a little bit, but all the guys had my back. Means a lot to finally get the first one, and hopefully, there’s a lot more coming.”

The last time the Stangs had scored four goals was their last win prior to Wednesday, which came in mid-December.

And while not necessarily an offensive boost, the Blue and Green had a pair of affiliate players on the backend, who filled in nicely and may have provided a spark.

“We felt like we’ve been trending in the right direction when it came to getting chances, we just weren’t capitalizing. Obviously, the four goals were great to get, but I feel like we were also great defensively and in net,” Mushumanski added.

“Our two APs came in, probably on short notice, and they played awesome. You honestly couldn’t tell that they weren’t regulars, so they definitely played a big part, and we were happy to have them.”
