Southern Road Trip Part 2

Mustangs looking for southern road swing redemption

Jan 16, 2026 | 4:15 PM

The Melfort Mustangs hit the road for their final overnighter of the season as they head south to Estevan and Weyburn.

Melfort will first play the Bruins on Friday, as it’s a reversal of their previous trip to the bottom of Saskatchewan, when they visited Weyburn to start.

The Mustangs lost both those contests during their first visit, so they hope to avenge those losses this time around.

“I think just playing our game and not playing any differently because we’re on the road. I find that sometimes we can get away from it on the road, so I think just creating our own energy, being physical, and all the stuff we do best, just stick with that, and the results will be in our favour,” explained forward Austin Shepherd.

“We just gotta be physical and just outplay them, be relentless and keep going no matter what the results are, or how the game’s going. Just play a full 60 minutes and have energy all game.”

The Stangs are coming off a 4-1 victory on Wednesday over the La Ronge Ice Wolves.

The hope is to carry some momentum from that contest in which they scored four for the first time in roughly a month and went 7-for-7 on the penalty kill.

“I think just playing the right way and getting back to the basics and playing simple. I think we kind of got away from that into the new year, so to get one under our belts was huge. Just got to keep building and keep getting the wins, because getting to the playoffs is definitely huge,” Shepherd.

“Our penalty kill was huge; we killed off a five-on-three and a five-minute power play. We also scored a short-handed goal five on three, so that was huge. Our kill was definitely good, so we just got to build off that and keep going.”

Puck drop in Estevan on Friday night is set for 7 p.m.
