Mustangs lay it all out there in gritty road win over Estevan

If the Melfort Mustangs want to make the playoffs, they’re going to have to consistently bring it the way they did on Friday night.

Melfort travelled to Estevan to face the Bruins and brought it nearly all game, as they fought tooth and nail for a 3-2 victory.

“We played pretty close to a full 60. We took a little bit off at times, especially in the second period there, but we’ve been on the wrong end of those a few times where we thought we played well enough to win, and it didn’t go our way. The breaks went our way this time, so it was good,” explained assistant coach Clarke Huxley.

“We believe in this group, and everyone in that room believes in the group. These guys know how to win, they’ve done it before, and the other guys are following suit. If we’re down, or we’re having troubles in the game, we believe that we can get back into it, and we got it done.”

The Mustangs never trailed as they scored first to make it 1-0, broke a 1-1 tie, and eventually got the 3-2 winner with less than five minutes.

Now, they’ll look to do the same on Saturday in Weyburn in hopes of the southern sweep.

“It was good to have the response, we had a few chances in the first period, and it didn’t go our way and go in. We talked about it in practice on Thursday about just sticking with her, because it’s easy to get a little bit frustrated when those pucks aren’t going in, but we stuck with it. All season, we’ll get frustrated when they come back and score right away, but we responded both times really well, I thought,” Huxley added.

“We know the position we’re in, and we’ve had two really good games since we last talked, but we gotta keep it rolling, and do it for the rest of the year.”

Puck drop against the Red Wings is scheduled for 7 p.m.
