Some good news for Melfort residents in need of a helping hand.

The Marguerite Riel Centre in Melfort has announced that their outreach program is once again in operation.

The program runs Mondays and Thursdays from 1 to 8 p.m.

Outreach will be offered at the Marguerite Riel Centre’s wellness centre at 103B Burrows Ave. W. from 1 to 6 p.m. They will then be out on the street from 6 to 7 p.m. before returning to the wellness centre from 7 to 8 p.m.

“We provide warm clothing, food, hygiene products, and anything else that is maybe needed,” Mackinley MacLeod told northeastNOW. “When we are out travelling around town, our vehicle has signage displayed on the doors.”

When the outreach program is at the wellness centre, individuals have a place to warm up, eat, have a warm drink, and take advantage of any supports that they may need.

MacLeod said residents can help by dropping off donations at the Marguerite Riel Centre.

“Whether it be clothing, footwear, blankets, hygiene products, or food for both men and women as well as children,” said MacLeod. “We also take monetary donations.”

“Another thing people can do is advocate and get the word out that this program is available.”

MacLeod said that it’s important to have the program, as there are homeless people in the community and individuals struggling with the cost of living.

The Marguerite Riel Centre is open Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and are closed over the noon hour. The Centre is also open Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Everyone is welcome and MacLeod said they will support them in any way they can.
