Another 3-2 win

Mustangs complete southern sweep with highly contested battle in Weyburn

Once again, it wasn’t easy, but once again, the Melfort Mustangs found a way, on a tough, but very successful southern swing.

Melfort travelled down to Estevan and Weyburn on Friday and Saturday, winning in both instances.

Following a 3-2 victory over the Bruins on Friday, the Mustangs completed the southern sweep on Saturday over the Red Wings with another 3-2 win.

“We played really well for the first 45 to 50 minutes, and we got up on them, and then obviously in their barn, a good team, they’re gonna push real hard, and we expected that, and we held up pretty well. Kind of a bend but don’t break situation, and I think that just kind of speaks to our group’s mentality right now. It’s resiliency, it’s sticking with it, and whatever they throw at us, we know what we got, so just stay behind it,” explained assistant coach Clarke Huxley.

“It’s fine if we have to win this way, we know where we’re at, we know exactly what the situation is, and we feel good about our group, so it’s off to the races for us then.”

After Weyburn scored first, the Stangs answered with three of their own before the Red Wings brought it to a 3-2 deficit and pressed hard for the late equalizer.

The Blue and Green ultimately stayed strong till the end, though, despite playing with virtually four defencemen the entire game, as their fifth and sixth backenders were affiliate players.

It was the third win in a row for the Mustangs as they continue to try to crawl their way back into a playoff position before the middle of March.

Melfort will look to make it four victories in a row when they host the Melville Millionaires on Wednesday.
