Provincial court case

Woman facing second-degree murder charge deemed unfit to stand trial

A local second-degree murder case won’t be proceeding in provincial court – at least for now.

Karrena Young was charged with second-degree murder after a child under the age of 10 was seriously injured and died at a home on Shoal Lake Cree Nation last May.

In Carrot River Provincial Court on Thursday, it was determined that Young is unfit to stand trial, and her case was referred to the Saskatchewan Review Board – an independent administrative tribunal established under the Criminal Code of Canada.

According to the Government of Saskatchewan, the board “makes or reviews decisions and orders (dispositions) regarding the accused where a verdict of not criminally responsible by reason of mental disorder or unfit to stand trial on account of mental disorder is made. The board also has the responsibility to determine whether a person should be subject to a detention order, a conditional discharge or be granted an absolute discharge.”
