Mixed Doubles Curling Provincials underway in Nipawin

Feb 6, 2026 | 3:13 PM

The best mixed doubles in Saskatchewan are in Nipawin this weekend, competing for the provincial championship.

The Nipawin Evergreen Curling Club is this year’s host for the CURLSASK event, which features former Scotties and Brier participants, such as Steve Laycock and Nancy Martin.

“We’ve tried to keep a great relationship with CURLSASK and really work on our facility to be a premium place to hold great curling events. With that relationship, we were fortunate enough to be able to hold this event this year, so we’re hoping everybody enjoys coming out to watch the games and see the provincials here,” said Nipawin Evergreen Curling Club past president, Spencer Maxwell.

“We’re very honoured to host this event, and we’re quite proud of our facility. It’s got a rich history of curling, so we’re just happy that we can showcase our town and our facility, and we hope everybody enjoys coming out to play and coming out to watch.”

The tournament began Thursday night with a pair of draws, with three draws scheduled for both Friday and Saturday. Sunday will then have the semi-final and final.

Mixed doubles presents a different format than regular four-person curling, as there are just eight ends, fewer rocks are thrown per end, and there are rocks put in the house to begin ends.

“We’re pretty excited. When you’ve got the likes of people that have been curling in the Scotties and the Brier, that’s pretty neat. Everybody’s used to watching them on TV and in Nationals, so when you get them coming to curl in your rink for an event like this, it’s always pretty exciting,” Maxwell added.

“We’re just hoping everyone has great games and they’re competitive.”
